1943: During war time, when London could not be used, an unofficial Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race was held rowing Upstream from Black Bridge (Nuneham Railway Bridge) and finishing at Radley College Boathouse. The crews were limited to three half days training a week. Watched by a crowd estimated at up to 10,000, Oxford won by two thirds of a length.
